I think I worked it out (brass is tip?) however it doesn't work. I'm not sure if is my wiring or it doesn't work with a powered Audio Technica lavalier mic.

Sorry another question! With the sockets you recommend from Maplins how can you tell which connector is the tip and which is the sleeve? One seems to be brass? I am not sure which one to connect the mic to.
Thanks!

Hi Russell, thanks for your comments. The socket where you connect your headphones uses two single core cables. You could use two-core screened cable. I only had single core cable at the time and it would have meant another trip to Maplins otherwise it would have been two core. Sorry if that's caused confusion. I should have pointed that out. There was a hidden benefit of using single core. I always know which connector is which without having to label them :-)

Thanks for this, it is great. I am going to give it a go. I am not an electronics expert - you say use single core cable but isn't there more than one connection on each end? I see yours has 2 cables for one socket and only 1 for the other but the schematic shows two or three connections for each one, sorry, I am bit of an electronics numpty!

Thanks

Hi Luke, you'd still need a splitter cable or adapter. Looking at the cable schematic above you'll see that the mic (1) is on what is traditionally a ground pin and ground is on (2). If you plugged the mic in without the splitter or adapter it would just short out. If you don't need the audio part of the splitter you could just make up the cable with a 4 pole 3.5mm jack to 3.5mm socket.

Had a quick google search for ready made cables and this company has a variety of cables http://www.kvconnection.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=KM-IPHONE-MIC&Search.x=0&Search.y=0

Hope that helps!

Hi there, I'm also looking to purchase the Sony z60 with the intention of recording lectures. If I don't need and audio output at the same time, why is it that you're required to use the splitter cable?
Also, if you could provide me with a link to a pre made cable, I'd be very grateful. =P

Thank you!

Hi Carol
Thanks.
Hoping to continue woodland project this coming term and also expand in another direction as well. Have been talking with local tourist office and they are up for working with the school to create a series of qr linked audio descriptions of local features of the town. Therefore the kids will research their own town, talk with older folks in the town who have knowledge about the selected building etc and then produce the qr code linked audio file.
Get local firm to manufacture qr plaques and get the kids involved in mounting them.
In time start researching tourist patterns and start creating language based audio descriptors hence allowing the project to link with modern languages department etc.
Exciting area. So much potential.
